Ava DuVernay's birth was on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise as a young child. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good vehicle for activism. Her summers in Alabama's Selma influence her later on to create an animated film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she graduated from the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay was in college when she started to get interested in production for broadcast journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a junior publicist right after college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Neben PR, her agency has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like the Urban Beauty Collective.
