Penelope Cruz Sanchez

Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser from Madrid. She was a compulsive performer as a child, and reenacted TV commercials to amuse the family. But she chose to devote her time to dancing. After pursuing classical ballet for nine years in the Spanish National Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of prominent dancers. She realized her passion at the age 15 after she defeated over 300 girls at an audition for an agency for talent. She was offered roles in Spanish TV and music videos. This contract resulted in a variety of roles, which opened the way to a future on the world of big screens. Cruz made her debut in a film with The Greek Labyrinth (1993). (The Greek Labyrinth). Following that she appeared briefly in Framed (1992) directed by Timothy Dalton. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her third film. In it, she played one of four sisters that were trying to win the love of a handsome Army deserter. This film won many Goyas, Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards. Cruz became a renowned Spanish actor with her three-to-four films per year increasing resume. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). In 1998, her luck changed when she took home the Best Actress Goya for the industry-related movie comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998). After a few more chances at film in the English language, Cruz's first international success was the film of Almodovar All About My Mother (1999) where she played an unchaste but very well-meaning nun. The film was flooded with awards and accolades, Cruz suddenly found herself highly sought-after across both sides of the Atlantic.
